How do Oral Contraceptive Pills work?

OCP is of two types.

Combined OCP, which contains both estrogen and progesterone.

Progesterone tablets, also known as mini-pill, are only progesterone.

It depends on the type of contraceptive medicine. When you take a Combined tablet, both hormones work on estrogen and progesterone and if you only take progesterone, then only one hormone is worked.

Progesterone works at three different levels. First, it prevents the ovulation, which means that no eggs are released. The result is that fertilization does not happen and therefore, pregnancy is stopped.

Prevents fertility

It condenses the cervical mucus, so that sperm can not go into the uterus. Obviously, if you are fat, sperm can not take your way to the egg. Since it fails to reach the egg, thereby affecting the possibility of fertilization, which prevents pregnancy.

Prevents the formation of the embryo

Third, it works at the endometrium level. As the endometrium layer is thin, it makes it difficult for implantation. Therefore, even if the egg is fertilized, the fetus fails to adhere to endometrium, thereby hindering pregnancy prospects.

Estrogen hormone

Combined pills contain high amounts of estrogen hormones. When estrogen levels are high in the body, then it suppresses the hormone FSH (Folic Stimulating Hormone), which prevents pregnancy. FSH plays an important role in hormone ovulation and therefore, low levels of FSH prevents ovulation and thus, the probability of pregnancy is less.
